Chick-Fil-A: What's your take?

Chick-fil-a has protestors knocking on their door the past week after their president Dan Cathy expressed his opinion about gay marriage:

"I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,' and I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about,"

While I am not living in the US right now, I have been able to see all of the attention that this has given to Chick-fil-a.  Protestors like the one in the picture above started the week.  Now, gay couples have decided take pictures of themselves kissing in front of Chick-fil-a and post them online as another form of protest.

The articles that I have read online and the youtube videos like this one show not just disagreement with Dan Cathy's statement, but intense anger toward him as well.  Resorting even to making fun of him.  Check out the youtube video to see what I mean.

My question is why go to such a low in protest?  I can understand the sign above, even the other forms of protesting outside of chick-fil-a's, but why the slanderous and, dare I say, hateful messages?  What is it about his statement that is making gays everywhere feel so threatened that they and supporters would rally together to  do much, much more than disagree with civility?  How does a statement like the one above mean that he then hates all gays?  Why the need to twist his words?

Whether or not you disagree with Dan, why the use of such hostile methods?
